With fully managed and easily scalable cloud hosting plans, Cloudways is a hosting provider that gives digital agencies and e-commerce businesses the flexibility and choice they need for boosting their websites. Cloudways is certainly one of the more well-established names in cloud hosting, and while it doesn’t offer VPS hosting, it’s got a great reputation in the industry. But is it the right choice for your hosting requirements?

There are lots of positive Cloudways reviews out there, but our web hosting experts have spent the last few months testing all four of Cloudways’ pricing plans to ensure the provider lives up to the high caliber associated with its name. Read on for our full Cloudways review.

Cloudways Features

Whether you’re a digital marketing agency or run a large e-commerce store, it’s important to ensure your website’s hosting capabilities are flexible and scalable enough to allow your website(s) to grow at the same rate as your business.

For our Cloudways review, we’ve carefully looked at all of the important factors you should consider when you’re making a decision about which cloud hosting provider you want to host your website with. From performance and security to monitoring tools and general customer support, here’s a full review of Cloudways’ features.

When you’ve got a business to run or a large team to manage, the last thing you want to be worried about is maintaining your websites or servers. That’s not a problem with Cloudways, though, thanks to an incredibly user-friendly platform that lets you focus on what’s important. Creating an account with Cloudways is easy. Many reviews are quick to point out that the platform is geared towards developers and large websites, but our hosting experts believe the design of a website means that even beginners will be able to easily find their feet with hosting their own websites.

Connecting domain and installing WordPress through Cloudways is just as straightforward, but if you do find yourself struggling for whatever reason, Cloudways provides plenty of resources to guide users through the process. And if you’re really feeling hopeless, you can always make use of the live chat section in the dashboard.

When it’s time to scale up your hosting requirements, Cloudways’ flexible cloud hosting servers are easily scalable within a couple of clicks and all of this can be done without affecting your existing server configurations or parameters. Better still, Cloudways’ pay-as-you-go pricing model means that you’ll never incur any additional costs and will only ever pay for the data that you’ve used. It’s important to note that Cloudways only offers cloud hosting and not VPS hosting.

In terms of performance, Cloudways’ servers won’t let you down. All servers launched on Cloudways have dedicated resources, which allows users to maximize server performance and app performance. SSD-based hosting guarantees awesome performance while also reducing page load time for dynamic websites, something that other Cloudways reviews have noted as an impressive feature.

As many websites are now built using WordPress, Cloudways has engineered Breeze, a bespoke and free WordPress cache plugin that offers better WordPress performance than any other plugin in the industry. And as all of Cloudways’ servers are PHP 7.x ready, you’ll never have to worry about your website crashing ever again thanks to auto-healing managed cloud servers. The cloud hosting servers are also HTTP/2 enabled, which significantly increases the speed of communication between the web servers and the clients’ own servers.

WordPress is the world’s most popular Content Management System, and as a result, WordPress websites are often one of the main targets for hackers. Thankfully, Cloudways cloud hosting and VPS hosting solutions are packed full of security features. All of Cloudways’ hosted servers are protected by OS-level firewalls that filter out malicious traffic to keep intruders at bay, while IP whitelisting lets users create a trusted list of IPs, making it easy to collaborate with networks or regions that have unrestricted access to SSH and SFTP.

There’s nothing worse than having your website hit by hundreds of fake comments from comment bots, but Cloudways has you covered with a special bot protection feature offered by its security partner Malcare, which safeguards websites from traffic congestion caused by malicious bots, brute force login attacks, and DOS attacks. And in case anything does manage to slip through the net, Two-Factor Authentication (TFA) will ensure your servers are always kept safe from intruders.

Integrations and Add-Ons

Decent cloud hosting providers should always provide a variety of add-ons to help customize and enhance your websites, and Cloudways offers plenty of choice in this area thanks to a variety of web services.

Cloudways has a bot that can be easily integrated with your own favorite channels, providing useful updates and notifications whether your team is working through Slack, API, or HipChat. Cloudways’ migration experts are able to migrate websites perfectly with minimal downtime, and cloud-based email inboxes powered by Rackspace offer guaranteed uptime and 24/7 support whenever you need it.

One of the things we wanted to highlight most in our Cloudways review is its fantastic API, which allows web developers to create, integrate, and manage servers and apps on Cloudways using the RESTful API. While some Cloudways reviews have highlighted the RESTful API may be difficult for beginners to get their heads around, we found it relatively easy to navigate.

Despite these concerns surrounding the RESTful API in other Cloudways reviews, it’s reassuring to know that the Cloudways customer support team is available 24/7 to solve any issues that you might encounter. Rather than having to use Gmail for any business communications, Cloudways has a reliable SMTP add-on that allows webmasters to easily configure an external SMTP service that can be used as a gateway to deliver emails to the business’s server.

Customer Support

Cloudways customer service is available 24/7 via an online ticketing system and live chat. Of course, if you’d prefer speaking to someone over the phone, you can request a callback and a member of the Cloudways team will quickly get back to you.

Cloudways has a tonne of benefits for users, but it’s understandable that less-experienced web users might be unable to utilize the platform to its full potential (something that several reviews have highlighted). Thankfully, if you’re looking to learn more about web hosting, Cloudways has a substantial knowledge base, which is packed full of useful help documents and tutorials. There’s also a thriving community forum, with regular posts and advice from other web developers and tech-geeks outlining useful information on how to make the most of everything that Cloudways has to offer.

We raised a variety of tickets, all with different questions, to gain a thorough understanding of how long it takes for Cloudways to get back to its customers (we wanted to provide the most accurate Cloudways review possible, after all!). Thankfully, any of our questions were quickly answered with really great advice by Cloudways staff, with all of our tickets being fully resolved in less than 24 hours.

Types of Hosting

Cloudways currently supports five different cloud providers: DigitalOcean, Vultr, Google Compute Engine (GCE), Linode and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to offer a variety of cloud hosting plans. It doesn’t provide the traditional shared, VPS hosting and dedicated hosting plans offered by other providers. Instead, it chooses to focus specifically on cloud hosting, with several monthly and pay-as-you-go hourly plans available.

Plans and Pricing

As Cloudway is built on letting customers build cloud hosting packages to their specific requirements, plans are split according to the size of RAM servers, processing core, storage, and bandwidth. Cloudways has four main plans:

RAM: 1GB / 2GB / 4GB / 8GB

Processor: 1 Core / 1 Core / 2 Core / 4 Core

Storage: 25GB / 50GB / 80GB / 160GB

Bandwidth: 1TB / 2TB / 4TB / 5TB

And all of these plans include the following features: 24/7/365 Support; Free SSL; CDN Add-on; Free Migration; Unlimited Application Installation; Team Management; Dedicated Firewalls; 24/7 Real-time Monitoring; Automated Backups; Staging Environment; Optimized With Advanced Caches; Auto Healing; Regular Security Patching; HTTP/2 Enabled Servers SSH and SFTP Access.

Prices for each plan vary depending on the cloud provider you’ve chosen out of the five. Digital Ocean is the cheapest out of all five providers, with the basic 1GB RAM and 25GB storage plan costing just $10 per month, ideal for smaller companies with minimum hosting requirements. Cloudways says it’s most popular plan is the 4GB RAM and 4TB Bandwidth, which costs $42 per month including DO hosting charges. If you’re choosing either Vultr or Linode as your hosting provider, the prices jump by just a couple of dollars.

Larger multi-site businesses will require the hosting power of AWS’ or Google Cloud’s data centers, which is where you can expect a significant price jump. The price for a basic plan with AWS as your provider starts at $36.51 per month and goes all the way up to $274.33 per month for the 8GB RAM and 160GB storage plan, the most expensive plan available. Google Cloud shares similar prices with AWS, but the biggest plan comes in slightly cheaper at $226.05 per month.

Other Cloudways reviews are quick to point out that its cloud hosting plans aren’t the cheapest out there. We definitely agree, but it’s important to note that Cloudways’ high-end offering outclasses many web hosts’ most powerful dedicated server plans. Of course, if you prefer hourly billing, you may end up saving money in the long-run, as Cloudways only ever charges users for the time that they use.

Unfortunately, this means that there’s no refund policy or money-back guarantee, but what happens if you want to cancel your account?

Thankfully, it’s possible to cancel your Clouways account and get a full refund if you need to. To cancel your account, all you’ll need to do is jump into your dashboard and select ‘Account’ from the header bar. On the page with information about your account settings, scroll down to the bottom and click ‘Cancel Account’. While other cloud hosting providers make you ring up and speak to a member of the team to physically cancel your account over the phone, it’s refreshing that with Cloudways, you can do all of this at the simple click of a button.

When you consider the wide variety of cloud hosting plans to choose from and the features that are on offer to users, it’s easy to see why Cloudways is such a hit with so many digital marketing agencies and businesses. Cloudways works brilliantly with WordPress websites and the user-friendly dashboard means that even if you don’t consider yourself a tech-geek, you’ll still be able to easily navigate the interface and make any changes to your websites – whether that’s adding new websites to your hosting or enhancing them with plugins – at the simple click of a button.

While there’s no VPS hosting available, Cloudways’ flexible cloud hosting plans, with their fast setup times and excellent uptime, make it a company that you can always count on to keep your websites performing at their very best. There’s a lot of positives and barely any negatives; unless you’re looking for a VPS hosting provider, Cloudways is the perfect mix of affordability and quality, and certainly able to deliver on everything it promises.
